THE ADJUSTMENT JOURNEY

A gentle, self-guided Companion for pet grief and adjustment.

When a beloved pet dies, the loss can change much more than the moments you spend with them.

It can change your routines, your home, your sense of connection and the way you move through everyday life.

The Adjustment Journey gives you a flexible collection of evidence-informed, creative and reflective Support Tools to help you navigate those changes, gently, at your own pace.

When your world feels different

Your pet was part of your life.

They may have been there for your morning routine, your evening, your walks, your weekends and the quiet moments in between.

They may have been the one waiting at the door, sleeping beside you, making you laugh or simply being there.

When they die, those everyday moments can suddenly feel very different.

The Adjustment Journey was created to give you somewhere gentle to turn as you find your way through those changes.

Not a timeline.

Not something you have to complete from beginning to end.

And not a set of things you should be doing.

Instead, you'll find different ways to understand, reflect, calm, create, move forward and connect — so you can choose what feels right for you today.

Your first Pause for Paws Journey

6 Pathways. 18 Support Tools. Your choice.

The Pause for Paws Companion is being developed as a collection of Journeys to support different parts of the pet bereavement experience.

The Adjustment Journey is the first.

Inside, you'll find six Pathways, each with three Support Tools.

You don't have to work through them in order.

You can explore one Pathway, return to a tool you've used before, or leave something for another day.

There is no right place to begin.

Where do you
need support today?

Grief doesn't move in a straight line. Some days you may want to understand what you're experiencing. Some days you may want to remember. Some days you may simply need to rest.

The Adjustment Journey gives you six different ways to meet yourself where you are.

  • UNDERSTANDING

    Make sense of your experience.

Explore the ways pet grief, attachment and change can affect your thoughts, feelings, routines and everyday life.

  • REFLECTION

Honour the memories and moments you shared.

Make space for the little things that made your relationship yours. The expressions, conversations, quirks, stories and memories you don't want to lose.

  • CALM

Give your mind and body somewhere gentle to land.

Grief can be exhausting. Sometimes you don't need to think about anything else. You simply need a moment to breathe, notice and rest.

  • CREATIVE

Find another way to express what words can't always hold.

Creativity can give memories somewhere to go. Explore simple ways to use pictures, food and nature to remember, honour and create.

  • MOVING FORWARD

Take the next small step, whatever that looks like for you.

Moving forward doesn't mean leaving your pet behind.

It can mean caring for yourself, rebuilding routines and discovering ways to carry what your pet taught you into the life you're continuing to live.

  • CONNECTION

    Find connection, companionship and support.

After loss, connection can look different. It might mean reaching out to someone, moving your body, listening to music or finding a new way to stay connected to the bond you shared.

Your journey may look different each time you visit. That's okay. Come back whenever you need support. We'll be here.

Designed around choice

There is no "right" way through this.

Your relationship with your pet was unique. So your experience of their loss will be unique too.

The Adjustment Journey isn't designed as a course you have to complete from beginning to end.

You choose.

You can:

  • Start with the Pathway that feels right today.

  • Spend five minutes with a Support Tool.

  • Listen instead of read.

  • Come back to something that helped.

  • Skip something that doesn't feel right.

  • Stop whenever you need to.

Your pace matters.

Read it. Listen to it. Come back whenever you need.

Every Support Tool is designed to be easy to move through on screen, with gentle guidance and opportunities to pause.

Guided audio reflections are included throughout the Journey.

Press play and be gently guided, or continue reading and move through the reflection at your own pace.

You can read. You can listen. You can pause. You can come back another day.

Created from the Pause for Paws approach

The Adjustment Journey has been developed as part of Pause for Paws, created by Clinical Educator, Researcher and Mental Health Therapist Dr Monica Hadges.

Pause for Paws brings together professional care with warmth, creativity and compassion, recognising the significance of the human–animal bond and the reality of pet bereavement.

The Adjustment Journey brings this approach into a self-guided digital Companion, giving you the flexibility to explore Support Tools in your own time and at your own pace.

A gentle reminder

There is no perfect way to grieve a pet. Your relationship was unique. Your loss is unique. Your culture, beliefs, family, circumstances and experience are your own.

Take what feels useful. Leave what doesn't. And move at a pace that feels right for you.

If you need more support than a self-guided resource can provide, consider reaching out to someone you trust or a qualified professional.

Your pet mattered.

And the relationship you shared still matters.

The love you shared doesn't become meaningless because your pet is no longer beside you.

The Adjustment Journey offers a place to pause, remember, reflect and gently find your way through the changes that follow loss.

Because the love you shared deserves a healing farewell.
